Electronic Arts will remove all references to the Washington Redskins in Madden NFL 21 after announcing it will change the name of a soccer team.
Earlier this week, it was stated that the Washington Redskins decided to remove the name and logo, following a review that began on July 3, for continuing racist attitudes towards Native Americans after years of criticism. The team’s new name and logo have not yet been announced.
With Madden NFL 21, the final game in the long-development NFL series, set to release August 25, Electronic Arts continues to work to replace the Washington Redskins with an overall team.
“We are pleased to see Washington’s decision to change the team name and visual identity,” an Electronic Arts representative told Kotaku. “We are working quickly to update Madden NFL 21 to have an overall Washington team, and we are working on the updated team name and logo design.”
An Electronic Arts representative said that the physical version of Madden NFL 21, which is in the final stages of preparation before the game’s release, will still include the Redskins name and logo, but they will release an update that will remove them once players are online.
EA Sports Against Racism
EA Sports announced in June that it would take a stronger stance against racism in its games after Electronic Arts’ support in the fight against racial injustice.
EA Sports’ NHL team said it will impose tougher penalties and strengthen profanity filters, as racism is common in their games.
